There’s Nothing Like A Good Heart

I found a link to this young man’s cause through another blog (Rafol Draws His Thoughts ) who put out a word for some support. My eyes pricked immediately upon seeing a young man named Joemil Reyes kind of help for this man. He is actually in active search for someone who only goes by the name ROLDAN PINEDA JIMENEZ or just plain Mang Roldan. This story was already featured in a local TV program, Kapuso Mo Jessica Soho.

Joemil chanced upon Mang Roldan in an eatery. He overheard him buying a P 5 worth of rice. His hair was dirty and wet. He just covered it with green towel and seemed shy about his appearance. Surely, he doesn’t want people to look at him. Less pity him. But Jeomil went straight to the man and ask if he wanted anything more to eat. And he’ll pay for it. He was too shy but said yes in a shaky voice...

You can read the rest of the story here.

Such a case of burning desire to help a fellow man. Who care deeply for other people who struggle a lot in life, fighting a force of a thousand sadness, deaths, sickness, and empty stomachs. Oh it is so easy to ignore the universe while we are so comfortably tucked in our own little fancy rooms. For some of us who always play it safe. Who never care much unless you’re a mother, husband, children, siblings, nephews, and nieces.

We all live under the same sky, share the same moon and sun. Only not all of us have meals, drinks, comfort and blankies. Others have so much choice, but there are a lot others who have none. Honestly this is so far out of my comfort zone. I can easily shed bucket of tears for anything about reuniting a lost child to her family, or a sick person given free medication and all that sorts, but I can also so easily shrug off shoulder to begging hands for fear that they are part of syndicate or I can easily close my eyes to tramps and vagrants I met along the way. All these while crying to every well-scripted episodes of “Wish Ko Lang”. May be I only like seeing them on TV, and not in flesh.

What a shame.

So this advocacy sets a whole new world of understanding for me. May be we could be more for others and share in this advocacy.

But more of all, I pray that Joemil would win this. And take Mang Roldan safely home.

What Do You Wish You Had An Infinite Amount Of?

It is accepted, we can never have everything. Forever. All things have their own expiration. There seems to be an imaginary line that when crossed, things and people became nothing more than a memory. And you need to move on as if nothing happened.

But supposed you are given a chance to wish for things you can have infinite amount of.

What would it be?

As for me, I wish I had never-ending energy, patience, laptop battery power, time, money, chocolate, abilities, writing time, reading time, shoes, pain threshold, moments with family, Zumba, clothes, ideas, nap time, hours in the day, words, shopping time, space for writing things, etc.

But since these are just too many- and some too impossible, life in real isn’t that comfortably predictable. If anything, life is the most hit-and-miss travel we'll even find ourselves on. It's a path that will be laced with tears and fears and, yes, joys along the way. It might make us scared sometimes. But other times, when our eyes are wide open and we're in the moment, we see them for what they are - pure joy. A smile, a lovely note, a compliment, giving to others, laughter, a fun game... there are an infinite number of things to take happiness in.

Yet for someone lying sick in bed, shoes and clothes no longer matter but rather a never-ending supply of drugs and medications. Or for a person living with cancer, a prevent hope for remission. Or going through tragic experience where your plane crashed into the open sea and you have no more than few seconds to live. Your heart tightens, and your chest to explode anytime. Beyond doubt, a chance to live one more day is all you what.

Really, life is wonderful, with equal parts of good and bad moments in every day. Make time your friend and remember to make the most of life while time is still on your side.

How I Feel In Photos

Neither rain nor flood can drown the Filipino spirit

The Real Rich People

Today the sun is out and everyone seems back in the business. But what seems to be a normal day for one person is the darkest, most miserable day for someone else. 49 people have died most because of drowning, others were buried alive and six more remain missing. Many people lost things in the most recent flood, things that took them years, sweat and tears to build.

But I have made a great discovery. I have discovered who the real rich people are. And these are the people who are able to pull through with life’s storms and crises. To those who stay strong amidst rubbles and chaos, loss and deaths. To wiser people who don’t put their hopes only on money and things.

We Filipinos are not only resilient; we sprung from a hardy race. In the words of the ex-President Carlos Romulo, we are browned skinned men, putting out to sea in ships that were as frail as their hearts were stout. Since time immemorial, we are tested by countless calamities; volcanic eruptions, devastating earthquakes and lahar flows, super typhoons, flash floods and landslides.

Today we are once again faced with great loss. But our richness of spirit does not come from what we see but from the One we put our hope on. It acts like a rudder that continuously reminds us the great truth- being God’s children.

Pains, trials, difficulties in life, non-stop, continuos action-packed adventure. That’s what life is and the blows, well, they keep coming. But I find inspiration from Corrie Ten Boom who says: When a train goes through a tunnel and it gets dark, you don’t throw away the ticket and jump off. You sit still and trust the engineer.

Having problems? Trust in God the engineer, the God of storm. He knows our beginnings and endings.

I don’t think I need to say more.

Blogging Ideas 101: The Sky Was Storming But My Mind is Empty

For nearly three years that I blog, many times I wonder what to write next. I say with my scanty experience, I’ve discovered that there’s a whole world of topics from serious to most ridiculous, to write about and play around with.

However a writer’s story is never his own. It's owned by whatever tale has hijacked his mind. And because structured blogging makes my teeth itch, my topics are as scrambled as your morning eggs and tousled and twisted like my brain. And if anything, especially to those newbies who have accidentally found this blog, here’s what you could possibly plagiarized add in your future blogs. And like many of you, I am to write my best blog post yet. However, I am meaning to drop a line to some of these topics that will hopefully earn me huge royalties in case they are turn to books, movies, TV commercials, etc. etc.

My timeline is infinite and so don’t expect perfect timing as well as social relevance.

1. Grand Review of Fifty Shades of Grey.

I have not seen, touched, smelled, but I’ve totally heard about this book. All I knew of Fifty Shades is that it started out as Twilight fan fiction and it has plenty of graphic sex scenes. Of course, I have to figure out what really sells a story. In case of Fifty Shades, metaphors, love stories with naughty bits, and erotic terms Mills-and-Boons-style lines like: “Don’t worry,” he breathes, his eyes on mine. “You expand, too”… sell it like crazy. I read somewhere that the author of Fifty Shades of Grey earns over a million dollars every week in royalties. Not bad.

(Note: my friend is doing a review of this one. I hope I didn’t pre-empt her)

2. Start Hate Campaign for Apple, Mac, etc.

We're all halfway through 2012 (WHAT??) and this 20th century can really make 70’s babies like myself feel like cryogenically frozen. Really, where was I when all the Itouch, Iphone, Itab, Ipad my son is so learned about came to market? When all I do is Iwash, Icook, Iscrub, Iclean? I think these big giants should know that their pricey gadgets and gizmos don’t make me feel connected. If anything, they make me feel remote and isolated. That's because they are too pricey. I recently purchased Galaxy Samsung pocket. At barely 5 thousand pesos, I went crazy looking for wi-fi area to have internet on my phone. For the longest time that I see people around me touching, their fingers gliding the cell phone’s screen while I click my old Nokia keypad it is just so thirsting, I tell you. But Snoopy dance, my husband’s sister gave us her Iphone recently. Yes! ‘Love you Apps!

3. Write Blog Series that You Need to Read So You Don’t Die.

I do not like those blogs, books, that advise readers on things they have to read/watch/listen to/eat/see before they die. The titles alone are threatening and fascistic. And what do you get after all that effort? Oblivion. How dare you impose a deadline on us, we have no intention of dying. Ergo I intend to list life’s essentials that promise the opposite: Read them and get more life. Lots more life.

4. Plants Vs Zombies: A Tale of Neverending Love

Like the Twilight books, but with zombies this time as lead players. Why should vampires and werewolves have all the fun? What have the readers got against zombies? Sure, you’ll devour books in which zombies chase people and eat their faces, but you never see them as romantic objects. Although I have yet to see a female zombie to play Bela but a little make over maybe the Sunflower can pass for a female love interest.

The problem is we tend to stereotype. Why? Is it because their skin and hair are falling off and the only thing they can say is “Aaaargh”? But right there are the ingredients of a tragic romance.

Young lovers standing together against a world that doesn’t understand their feelings — check. Young lovers hunted by parties sworn to eat their brains — check. A sense of doom — may be stronger pea bullets or taller walnuts that will drift them apart— check. My son will so love this.

5. My Own Uncensored, Tell-All Autobiography

Including never-before-seen photos and all the hard facts I myself know nothing about. It’s my mother narrating the story. I can’t wait to read.

I am invited to guest post at Between You and Me. This or another totally different post may appear. Spell awesome!
